| The High Point Chamber of Commerce Annual
Small Business Awards Luncheon was held Friday,
June 3, 2005 , at the High Point Country Club.
The luncheon was held during a joint Rotary
and Kiwanis meeting and over 350 people were
on hand to congratulate the 2005 recipients.
“We are very proud to take this opportunity
to honor all the small businesses of High
Point", states Carol Jollay, Chairman
of the luncheon committee. "The recipients
of this year’s awards are just a few
examples of the wonderful entrepreneurial
spirit that exists in the High Point community”.
The 2005 recipients are, Gary Simon of
Simon Jewelers (Small Business Person of
the Year in the 1 to 25 Employees), Walt
Blackburn of Adams Wood Turning (Small Business
Person of the Year in the 26-250 Employees),
Jim Morgan of Morgan, Herring, Morgan, Green,
Rosenblutt & Gill (Small Business Advocate
of the Year) and Pamela Palmer of High Point
University (Minority Business Advocate of
the Year)
Finalists for the awards were: David Ashcraft
of Wyatt Early Harris & Wheeler, Mary
Bogest of Mary Bogest Impressions, David
Cecil of Cecil & Cecil, Phil Flores
of Outback Steakhouse, Marty Payne of A.M.
Payne & Associates and Wesley Memorial
United Methodist Church.
“Small business is the fuel for the
engine that powers our nation’s economy”,
commented Tom Dayvault, President of the
High Point Chamber of Commerce. “Without
them championing the cause of free enterprise,
many of us would not be able to enjoy the
standard of living that we are blessed to
have. It is an honor to pay tribute to them”.
Mayor Rebecca Smothers was also on hand
to proclaim June 3, 2005 as “Small
Business Day” for the City of High
Point .
